Butterfield's Bakery & Market, a new concept from the chef-owner of Kate Smith Soirée, has signed a lease to become the Market's latest anchor restaurant tenant.

Butterfield’s Bakery & Market has signed a lease to become the latest anchor restaurant tenant at the Lenexa Public Market. This new bakery and market concept from the chef-owner of Market tenant Kate Smith Soirée will serve soups, salads and sandwiches featuring house-made breads for lunch and dinner, brunch on weekends anan expanded menu of sweets from Kate Smith Soirée, including more pastries and ice cream treats.

“We are thrilled to announce Butterfield’s Bakery Market as our newest anchor tenant,” said Carmen Chopp, Lenexa Public Market manager. “In addition to being a gathering space and point of connection for our community, the Public Market was designed to be a small business incubator. Kate’s growth and expansion is proof of concept. That this is happening in the middle of a pandemic is nothing short of incredible and speaks to her work ethic, ingenuity and tenacity.”

Kate Smith started out at the Market as a popup day cart vendor selling specialty macarons in March 2019. In June 2019, she opened her Kate Smith Soirée specialty confections stall. When Madman’s KC BBQ closed at the Market this summer, Smith said she recognized the opportunity to expand her business anfill a gap in the Market’s blend of cuisines with Butterfield’s, named after the grandmother who inspired her love of cooking.

We could have stayed in our little stall and kept serving desserts, but I’ve always felt like the Public Market was lacking a great sandwich and brunch option,” Smith said. “I’ve wanted to expand our current stall to offer fresh breads and ice cream as well, but our 100-square-foot space only gives us room to do so much. Then with the closing of Madman’s, the Market’s need for a new restaurant outweighed any fears that I may have had. With the amount of families that come to the Market, comfort food, desserts and ice cream are a must.

“The Lenexa Public Market and the City of Lenexa have been nothing but supportive of my business from the beginning and are truly in it to help small businesses like mine grow.”

Butterfield’s is expected to open in late November or early December 2020. Details for a soft opening and grand opening will be announced in the coming weeks. Visit ButterfieldsKC.com or follow them on Instagram and Facebook to learn more.
