Meet the Merchant: Jill McEnroe

Posted on 09/14/2017
Not to disappoint, but this isn’t Frannie. It’s Jill McEnroe, managing partner of Frannie Franks Coffee Cakes. Frannie was Jill’s mother, and her knockout coffee cake recipe is what inspired the idea for the business. The handcrafted cakes are made with the finest ingredients and high standards. Jill bakes at the Ennovation Center, a popular commercial kitchen in Independence where many local food entrepreneurs get their starts.

We caught up with Jill at her stall in the Lenexa Public Market to ask a few questions about her growing business. (Stop by to try a free sample!)

Q. What is it you really do?
A. Making delectable coffee cake is my super power.

Q. What excites you about the Lenexa Public Market?
A. The Lenexa Public Market is our first retail location, making us more available to customers. We love the space and possibilities. We eventually want to open a larger location to support wholesale operations.

Q. What might surprise someone to know about your business?
A. We’ve been doing this for six years and are being considered for Oprah’s Favorite Things!

Q. What makes your business unique?
A. Even though our coffee cakes are knock-your-socks-off good, there are no saturated fats, no corn syrup, no preservatives, and no dairy.

Q. What is one thing you hope customers say after they leave your restaurant/shop?
A. Delicious! We’ll be back!

Q. What made you get into this business?
A. Working as a graphic designer, I made a coffee cake from my mother’s recipe for my boss's birthday. He whispered into my ear, “You could sell those.” So we did! Dean & Deluca was the first to feature Frannie Franks.

Q. Why should people support local businesses?
A. It creates more jobs and is good for the economy.

Q. What’s the coolest thing you’re working on?
A. Shh…new flavors! S’more? Candy Bar? And we’re excited about the holidays!

Q. Favorite lunch spot?
A. Gates Bar-B-Q! Turkey on bun or bread!

Q. Where might someone find you if you weren’t at work?
A. At the dog park with Sadie Mae, my ridgeback, and Annie Pearl, my lab mix!
